With that said, it was still a very exciting read and if I hadn't seen the movie it would probably would've been 5 stars. I especially liked the involved celebrity targets - William Shatner, David Beckham, and Mick Jagger, among others, are taken hostage by the lead villain of the piece for a diabolical plot that actually makes some sense - and the dark humor (such as an unexpected fatal snowmobile crash in the opening pages) that worked without seeming too mean-spirited. Expanding upon the cruelty of this turn of events, Eggsy’s dad’s death is used as proof that Harry is wrong about recruiting spies from different economic backgrounds.

Whilst fleeing, Treeman gains access to a Red Diamond computer and uploads an override to delete the Red Diamond virus. Gary is a thuggish oik from a generic housing estate in Britain who spends his days boosting cars and smoking spliffs. This new female Gazelle also seems to replace the character of Ambrosia Chase, who was Dr James Arnold’s girlfriend in the comic. Having dropped out of training for the Royal Marines, becoming a stereotypical chav and being arrested for stealing a car, Gary "Eggsy" Unwin's release is arranged by Harry Hart, a Kingsman and his late father's colleague.While the rest of the violence in the movie is fairly light and even comedic, the scene in the church is almost uncomfortable to watch.

I can't give too much away because Matthew Vaughn and I co-conceived the thing with Dave [Gibbons ], and Vaughn is literally right now writing the screenplay of the movie, so we're on a non-disclosure agreement for a little while yet. In the film, this is changed to The Kingsman, an independant superspy organization modeled after the Knights of the Round Table.Interestingly, this wouldn't be the last time actress Sofia Boutella was cast in a role that was male on the page, as Atomic Blonde would go on to make a similar casting decision. The Prime Minister of Britain receives a Betamax tape from the head of the Red Diamond, self-made South African mining magnate Jakobis Du Preez, who explains his plans to replace the world's physical money with gold and jewels; in a separate tape, he invites the “Kings and Queens of the new material world” to a remote location in the Hunan Province, China. When Eggsy needs to leave for training, he expands upon this lie to say he’s going to work with computers. It starts promisingly enough, the opening sequence being a funny spoof on The Spy Who Loved Me, and the first half of the story actually does a good job in building up expectations.

This lays the groundwork for the next test, where Eggsy is told to prove his loyalty by assassinating his dog, or be eliminated as a viable candidate. While the comic does include a spy training camp, it’s really just meant to put Eggsy through his paces—since there isn’t a hole in the roster to be filled, there’s no competition, and we don’t spend any time getting to know any other spies-in-training in the comic. The book has a good message to impart of how anyone can make something of themselves even if they come from nothing, and that they shouldn’t let stereotypes define their identity, but it’s diluted with a lot of cynicism from elsewhere in the story.
